Let’s Not Forget Math! There’s More to Elementary School Than Reading

The Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) is a statewide K-12 initiative managed by the Alabama Department of Education. The goal of ARI is to significantly improve reading instruction and ultimately achieve 100% literacy among public school students. Since its introduction in the mid 1990s, nearly every school in the state has participated. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on professional development, reading coaches, and other aspects of the program.

Indeed, reading has increasingly become the primary focus of instruction in elementary classrooms across the state, with many elementary schools allotting three or more hours for reading instruction. Other important areas, such as mathematics, science, and social studies have been dramatically deemphasized in contrast.
